A randomized controlled trial enrolled 2000 patients with a history of myocardial infarction to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Drug X over a 5-year period. Of the 1000 patients randomized to Drug X, 40 experienced a recurrent MI, compared with 80 of the 1000 patients on placebo. Serious liver toxicity occurred in 20 patients on Drug X and in 5 patients on placebo. Calculate the number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent one MI and the number needed to harm (NNH) for one case of serious liver toxicity, then choose the statement that best reflects the clinical significance of these findings in deciding whether Drug X’s risk–benefit profile justifies its use.
